Midweek Martin’s triple success

Calder Valley Fell Runners – 18 July 2022

With two of the Calder Valley championship events taking place over the weekend the championships are certainly hotting up along with the daily temperatures. Another bumper week with these hot conditions not deterring lots of our club members from taking part in fell races all over the country.

They say that thirteen can be unlucky for some but this certainly wasn’t the case for Martin Howard or Andy Worster.

On Wednesday 13th July it was the local Widdop Fell race, a classic high moorland route, starting at the Packhorse Pub, and following good and interesting paths. It traverses the dam wall of Gorple Lower Reservoir before the hard work of tussock bashing towards Widdop Reservoir. The return journey heads across the moors and through head high ferns back to the pub.

Here’s what Ed Hyland had to say

‘It was a lovely evening, conditions were really good and it wasn’t too hot. It’s the fourth time I’ve run Widdop Fell Race and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s quite a quick course with less than the usual climbing for a 7 mile fell race. It’s very technical in places with narrow trails and long grass so you can’t see where you’re placing your foot and with a few hellish tussock thrown in for good measure it keeps you on your toes.
