Calder Valley Fell Runner – 31 January 2022
Despite an onslaught of storms over the weekend, our runners were doing what they do best – hitting the fells and moors, and pitting themselves against the clock and the elements.
Oliver Beaumont, no stranger to a challenge, took himself off to Cumbria, to compete in the Kong Winter series Clough Head race (organized by Keswick and Ambleside clubs). This is a deceptively short race which, with 1095 ft of climbing over 3.5 miles, feels like twice the distance, especially with Storm Malik pummelling you with 80mph gusts. You can’t laugh in the face of winds like that – they take your breath away! Oliver did us proud, coming 131st – in an exceptionally strong line-up – with a time of 40.25 minutes. Well done to Oliver, a relatively new member who goes from strength to strength.
On Sunday, 30 January, Adam Osborne took part in the Wharfedale Harriers’ Runners and Riders race in Appletreewick. As its name suggests, this pits runners against cyclists over a varied-terrain 4.7 mile route, with 890 ft of climbing – again, this year, in somewhat windy but dry conditions. With the going so good the first 11 to cross the line were all on bikes but speedy Adam Osborne showed what can be achieved on 2 legs by taking the top runners spot in just over 31 minutes, less than 5 minutes behind the first rider. Judging by the smile on Adam’s face he left lots of bikes behind. Legs versus pedals – always a toughie – well done Adam! 186 took part and all proceeds raised went to the Upper Wharfedale Fell and Rescue Team.
