Getting there

We would encourage anyone who can get to the race by public transport to do so. Here are some helpful instructions.

Mytholmroyd is served by a train station on the Leeds – Manchester Victoria line and is one stop away from Hebden Bridge.

Not all trains stop at Mytholmroyd Train Station so do check.

Come out of Mytholmroyd station and turn right onto B6138 Cragg Vale Road. Walk along until you meet the main Burnley Road and turn left. Walk on to the first road on the left past the pedestrian lights and following this road go over the bridge and the big building straight in front of you is the community centre.

If you get a train to Hebden Bridge you can take the cycle path. Come out of the station building and turn immediately right down the steep slope. This is the start of a traffic free/riverside path to Mytholmroyd. It only takes 5 minutes by bicycle or 15 minutes to walk or jog to the race HQ at the end of Caldene Avenue. Alternatively you can walk onto the main road from the station onto Burnley Road and crossing over you will see a bus stop where you can catch a bus to Mytholmroyd. Get off at the stop in Mytholmroyd at Dusty Miller Pub. Turn left towards the pedestrian lights where you should cross the road. Turn right and follow the road immediately on your left. Go over the bridge and the big building straight in front of you is the community centre.

Buses from Halifax area come in the opposite direction. Get off at the stop just after you see Russell Dean Furniture store on the right. Getting off the bus turn right towards the pedestrian lights and take the first road on your left. Go over the bridge and the big building straight in front of you is the community centre.

If you are coming by car PLEASE car share as parking is always very tight and it's way more fun, environmentally friendly and cost effective to share.

Race requirements

The race is licensed by the FRA under UKA rules and is therefore a non-GPS race. You are allowed to use a GPS device to record your route and display your distance travelled during the race. However electronic devices cannot be used to aid navigation except in the case of an emergency. If you choose to use any GPS functions to navigate to safety you must declare yourself as a non-competitive participant at the finish.

FRA mandatory minimum kit is compulsory including waterproof full body cover (Waterproof full body cover means a pair of waterproof trousers and a waterproof jacket with an integrated hood. Both items must have taped seams) + hat and we mean a proper hat as this is a winter race (not a buff please) + gloves + map + compass (not out of a Christmas cracker) + whistle + emergency food.

Kit check prior to race number allocation on the day. Not the correct kit you won't be allowed to race.

Route description

The race starts on the bridge next to Burnley Road Primary School, just off the A646 Burnley Road in Mytholmroyd. (SE 011 262) The start is tough as it climbs up through the fields past Hill House Farm, reaching Heights Road (SE 011 271) then continues to climb up through the fields to Wicken Hill. (SE 013 272) The route eases slightly as you cross an open section of Midgley Moor going first to a wall corner (SE 014 275) before following the track to Churn Milk Joan (SE 020 276). You then cross rough moorland to reach the wall corner at (SE 027 278). You must go over Crow Hill rather than around it. Please note that the cut off time for reaching Crow Hill is 11.40am. Turn left to make your way off the moor at (SE 028 279). Travel down the lane and across rough land to reach the road at (SE: 031 279). Take the long track along the Luddenden Valley to the Gate House at Castle Carr (SE 022 291) at the head of the valley, before taking the steep climb up onto the moor at (SE 018 290). On top of the moor you follow rough tracks to the wall corner and Calderdale Way at (SE 011 285). This is again an area of open moorland where navigation skills may be required. Follow the Calderdale Way to (SE 009 274). Follow a rough track following the wall above the golf course to meet your original ascent route just above Wicken Hill Farm. You then retrace the initial ascent route all the way back to the woods at Mytholmroyd (SE 011 262) where the racer started.
