2007

I’d planned this year’s route to give a mix of controls for those who only wanted to go a short distance and those who wanted to go further, but especially to present a dilemma for those who could aim to be near the top of the table!

The controls within easy reach of Trough Farm were limited in number but challenging enough for most. If you were content to finish in mid- to high- table you needn’t visit the controls on the other side of the Keighley Road (1, 2, 4 and 6). But anyone with an intention to try to win would have to go for them. The dilemma was that those far controls weren’t very high points and they were a long way from home. So if you went for them and were not quick enough you’d risk either missing out on the higher value controls on the way back, or running out of time and plummeting down the results!

The weather had been great on Friday and Saturday as I put out the controls, but it was a shame that the start of our event seemed to trigger the onset of winter with cold rain and snow greeting us on Sunday. I worried that that would make it too hard to get to the further controls, so I made a last minute change to the penalties for being out of time (1 point per minute up to 30 mins, rather than 2 points per minute) and advertised that on the board.

Even so, I was impressed that five runners managed to get to some of those furthest four controls (no-one got to all four) with enough time to pick up good points on the way out and back, and they filled the first five places in the final results. Richard G and Colin also made it out there, but didn’t pick up enough of the intermediate controls.

Mandy and James have now both won three of the five CVFR winter score events that we’ve held, however Mike Wardle has racked up more points than anyone else in total over those events (839) – James has 830, while Mandy has the third highest (763).

Hope you enjoyed it. I enjoyed recceing the control features and routes over the last couple of months. And I’m still eating the leftover cake!
Cheers, Bill
