Night Score

Come and “SHINE” on

2008 Race Report

Once mentioned, Thirza would not let this idea go, and her conviction that it would be popular was proved right. The weather on the night was mild and it had more or less stopped raining, though few people carried the recommended kit of snorkel and flippers. I planned the controls on line features so that they would not be too difficult to locate in the dark, even for inexperienced night navigators. There were 10 controls in the wedge of land centred on Erringden Moor between Burnley Road and Cragg Road and extending from Mytholmroyd to Stoodley Pike and beyond. I estimated that no one would get all the controls, and, partly because of the extremely wet and boggy conditions, I was right, through James Logue ran very close, just not reaching the one above London Road beyond Stoodley. It was also pleasing that every control was visited by someone, and a variety of routes were chosen. One cock-up (a control circle on the map 200m to the east of where it should have been) was accepted with good humour, and six out of ten people who went for this control found it anyway. The other four were also credited with the points.

Forty eight people took part, singly or in groups, and James Logue was a clear winner with an amazing run. Simon Bourne and Alistair Morris fought it out for second place (mainly around the missing control!), Jonathan Emberton and Nick Murphy made up the first team, Bill Johnson was the leading vet and Mandy Goth won the women’s prize. I awarded the prize of a pair of glasses for the biggest navigational cock-up to myself for the error on the map. Maybe we’ll do it again next year.
