The English Junior Fellrunning championship got under way on a glorious day in Newlands Valley near Keswick in the Lake District. Thirteen Calder Valley juniors made the long trip, many taking full advantage of the chance to spend a few days in the Lakes, and all of them did really well. Its just fantastice to see so many of you out there racing and having FUN!!!
The different age categories were all run separately one after the other and starting with the U8 in which both Chloe Greenwood and Gemma Johnson ran. Chloe set of the faster of the two, but it was Gemma who finished the stronger to be the overall race winner and officially best in England.
In the U10 race we had 6 runners Luka Morris ran the testing route brilliantly to finish a great 5th. The races all started from a field below the slopes of Catbells near the village of Stair. Running up uphill through the field the runners then went through the farmyard as do the seniors before racing round a small wooded area on the lower slopes of the nearby fell before charging back down the hill to the finish. Luka was followed home by Sam Foster, Adam Johnson, Silas Page and Dillon Whitelaw whilst in the girls race Jade Harvey did herself proud with another good run. All of them did really well. Nice one.
As the age categories got older so the races got longer and harder, the U12 race followed the same route as the U10 until it took a direct route up the front of the lower slopes of Catbells which was very steep, before being turned diagonally across the face of the slope and the long return run to the finish. Max Wharton ran well all the way to be in contention and he was rewarded with finishing 7th overall. He was followed in by Edan Whitelaw who ran well to finish inside the top 15. In the girls race Issy Wharton found the race unusually hard yet still finished well up the field.
The U14 race saw Peter Walker making not only his debut for the club but also taking part in his first ever race. Having only joined the club two weeks previously he wasn’t fazed by the bigger stage of a national competition to begin his racing career. Whilst he found it impossible to stay with the leaders Peter had an outstanding race and was able to run down several more experienced runners on the run in to the finish showing great determination.
Jack Page ran well also to finish in a good position in what was a very tough race, as the climb up the front of the fell was longer still for this race. Jack and Peter can look forward to pushing each other all season long.
At the time of writing I haven’t been able to get hold of the results so the positions are my best guess. The results when we get them will be linked from the website.
This years championship races have been decided and are on the Championship page. For those of you that have already noted the dates - the Ilkley race date was wrong - 24th not 23rd.
The Club Championship is over for 2007 now and the final points have been added. Well done to all our juniors who took part all 44 of you and well done to all those who have come out on top.

Some of the above have finished with the most points but have not necessarily run in enough races to qualify for a trophy. All trophies and prizes will be given out at our presentation evening on 23rd February 2008.
Keep an eye on the website as next years races will be revealed soon
Heres hoping that all you juniors have a great Christmas and New Year. Training will be starting up again on the 8th Jan usual time and place.
Unfortunately as it’s the start of a new year your subs will once again be due. As always each session will be £1 unless you are a member in which case there is no weekly cost. After much debate we have decided that the yearly membership will have to increase to £7 this year. This will help us with the costing of the yearly trophies we are now happily going to giving out which we didn’t have originally.
Hopefully you will all agree that its still worth £7 for a years chance to run around in mud and get cold or tired.
See you on the 8th.

Calder Valley Fell Runners inaugural club champs came to a climax on a freezing morning at Penistone Hill Country Park above Haworth last weekend when 19 keen youngsters took part in the Stoop fell race which turned out to be even more popular than the well organised race usually is with record numbers taking part.
In the U8 race which is always run first starting in the quarry bottom with runners having to climb out of the quarry twice Adam Johnson confirmed his winning of this age group by once again finishing first for the club and 6th overall but it was a close race with Jude Corcos finishing in 7th and Joey Gwilliam in 10th further back in his first race for the club was Stanley Hunter whilst his sister Daisy was also completing her first race.
The U10 race once again proved to be the race with the most Calder runners. Nial Oxley ran superbly to finish runner up by just 1 sec in a time of 7.56 for the testing 1 mile course. Edan Whitelaw also had a fantastic run to finish 2nd for the local club and 6th overall. He was followed closely by Euan Davies in 7th whose fine run sealed victory for him in the club championship and Jamie Gwilliam in 9th. Finishing in 10th Luka Morris confirmed his second place in the club competition following a year long series of tough local fell races. Another club debutant Jack Fillingham was next in 11th followed by Sam Foster in 12th Silas Paige 15th Nat Hairsine 16th and Dillon Whitelaw who finished 19th. In the equivalent girls race Molly Chesworth also in her first race finished a very creditable 10th.
In the older age categories both Calder Valley runners had good results. Siarlot Lloyd did very well to finish in 4th spot whilst Jack Paige produced his best race of the year to complete the course ion the fastest time of any Calder runner and claiming 5th in a highly competitive race.

A enjoyable day was had by over 50 members of the club

Yorkshire Junior Fell ChampionshipsHellifield Gala this year played host to the Yorkshire Junior Fell Race Championships on a very wet 4th August. Local junior fell running club Calder Valley were represented by brother and sister Max and Issy Wharton who both came home with the spoils of success. Max ran strongly from the start in the U12 race and was rewarded with a fine 5th place in the race but because he was the third Yorkshire runner home he qualified for a Bronze medal. Sister Issy running in the U10 race was the first girl back across the line finishing in 6th place overall. Unfortunately for Issy there were no medals for the U10 race but there is always next year. |
