Press Release:

Despite a small turn out for the Junior races organised by local club Calder Valley Fell Runners at the Coiners fell race on the evening of Monday 19 th June the event was enjoyed by all those who had turned out to run support and help.

Calder Valley - who are celebrating their 21 st year next year - are just starting up a junior section had organised junior races in several categories including U8 U10 U12 and U16 in an attempt to launch the new junior club.

The races were advertised through the local schools and press and the children who turned up to run faced some tough courses.

All the races started of Nest Lane in Mytholmroyd where the U8s were set a course around the lower slopes and staying within site of the cheering group of supporters at all times. The boys were lead home by Jack Crumett of Todmorden Harriers closely followed by Alisdair Pedley from Cragg Vale third place went to Silas Paige of Midgley. Fifth overall and first girl was Ellie Newton who received the gold medal for her efforts with the silver and bronze going to Chloe Greenwood and Gemma Johnson respectively.

The older age groups all set off together and headed up towards Daisy Bank before traversing across and tackling the challenging climb up White Field Lane after cutting through the woods the U10/12 turned for home heading back through Park Fold Wood to Daisy Bank before sprinting down the final field to the finish and amidst loud vocal support.

Bringing the field home in the U10/12 race was Max Wharton in a time of 11m13s giving him the gold medal in the U10 just 3 seconds ahead of Marcus Preedy who does his running with Rossendale Harriers who claimed the silver. The bronze medals were shared by Ryan Mcalpine and Edan Whitelaw who finished 5 th and 6 th overall. Claiming the top 3 places in the U12 were Joey Scarf, Jack Paige and Joe Kinton with 1st and 2 nd being separated by just 3 seconds. Joes brother made a double family celebration by also running the longer course despite being just 8 years old finishing in 7 th overall he was given a well deserved medal.

The U16s race was very tight affair, having followed the same course as the younger race the older runners were turned toward the open moor at the top of White Field Lane . As they made there way across Erringden Moor before turning for home the top 3 ran each other close, the long downhill finish failed to separate them to any large extent and all 3 finished within 13 secs of each other. Ben Page of Halifax harriers lead them home for gold in 17m 19s with Ashley Wright crossing the line in 17m 19s for silver and Kieran Russell of Rossendale taking bronze in 17m 27s.
