It’s one small step in the English champs, one great leap of a week for CVFR

Calder Valley Fell Runners – 8 April 2024

Spring has sprung, and with plenty of racing options for seniors and juniors this week, CVFR duly sprang into action.

At Lad’s Leap, our Open and Women’s teams leapt at the chance to notch up more brilliant individual and team results in the English Champs. Meanwhile, some of our younger lads leapt over the Lancashire border for the latest Junior club champs fixture at Pendle.

Closer to home, some red-and-white-clad bunnies went bounding around Penistone Hill at the first of the year’s Bunny Runs. And fresh from facing G-force winds at Wardle, new club member Neil Thorpe tells us why he’s decided to jump feet first into fell racing.

CVFR land on their feet at Lad’s Leap

Sixteen of CVFR’s finest headed to the Peak District on Saturday for Lad’s Leap, the first short counter in this year’s English Championships. Another tour de force for the club saw both the Open and Women’s teams build on their recent strong starts to the season at Flower Scar.

In the women’s race, Charlotte Jackson was the first CVFR back, taking 23rd place in 1:05:28. Charlotte gave this account: “Glorious day, with the sun out and plenty of buzz. Thanks to Storm Kathleen, the wind was in full force and everyone commented on how their feet never landed as intended. The route starts with a tough, technical climb and then you enter the peaty bogs – which you then get to return to, after a loop and a long climb up the forestry track. A marvellous way to tire the legs out in anticipation for the technical descent! A race that had a bit of everything.”
